Website Redesign and Search Engine Optimization
gold star chiliIn June, Gold Star Chili engaged us to redesign their website with the goal of increasing the number of eClub subscribers as a method to consistently engage with their best customers via targeted promotions. Since the launching of the newly designed, interactive site in August, over 5,000 new e-club members have been registered on-line, fueled by various Cincinnati Bengals, National Chili Month, serving our troops, and Gold Star Kids promotions. In conjunction with the re-launching, we have begun the process of optimizing their website for search engines as a method driving additional traffic to the site. The keyword of ‘Cincinnati Chili’ now ranks www.goldstarchili.com 11th on Google, up from 51st in early September and ranks 10th on Yahoo, where it wasn’t in the top 500 prior to the Search Engine Optimization process.

How can you apply this information?
A higher-ranking means more traffic, inquiries, and ultimately leads to more sales. According to a recent study, unless you are mentioned in the Top 10 Google, Yahoo, or MSN listings, there is a 62% chance your website will not be visited. You can improve your odds of success, by engaging in a proactive Search Engine Optimization process and consistently updating your website content through Public Relations activities.

Contact David Owens (513.388.4700 x3019 or dowens@jyadvertising.com) to learn where your website currently ranks in the major search engines of Google, Yahoo and MSN based on selected keywords. Additionally, ask about the difference between Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) vs. Pay-Per-Click Advertising.

The Difference Between Creative and Effective
By W. Dale Justice, Partner, Justice & Young

Which is more valuable, a handful of gold, or a handful of salt? The gold sparkles with the promise of “the good life” and all it encompasses. The salt lies in your palm like so much dust. What’s the difference not readily seen?

Simply stated, the gold is very pretty, but you couldn’t survive without salt.

Ten Tips for Effective Design
by Laura Haughey, Designer, Justice & Young

1. Don't overload your audience with type. Keep lines short and paragraphs small.

2. Make sure your logo is on every piece of material you publish, from billboards to price tags.

3. Use consistent colors. Pick your company colors, and stick with them. Set up your branding standards with specific spot color and their CMYK equivalents.

4. Choose your fonts wisely. A good rule to keep in mind is that if you're using more than three fonts, you're using too many.

5. Even if you're using the same fonts throughout everything you publish, make sure you're using the same point size for your headers, copy, and footers.

6. DO NOT USE ALL CAPS. No matter how important something is, an all cap statement feels like you're screaming to anyone reading your copy.

7. When everything on a page is important, nothing is. If you want to make something stand out, choose one or perhaps two very important things and call them out.

8. Break up the space on your pages by using sections of color or linear elements. This makes it easier to focus on one area at a time.

9. Make all photos and images as large as possible. Images are more interesting than words.

10. If you can't get a 300 dpi image of what you're going to put on your printed piece, or 72 dpi for your website, then don't use it. Nothing looks more unprofessional than a pixellated image.

Justice & Young Rolls to the Beat With a New Drum

Jeff Drum has been hired to lead our public relations practice. Drum shares the philosophy with J&Y principles in understanding that the ever-changing, ever-evolving world of marketing communication requires that companies connect with their customers by discovering their "points of pain." By doing so they may then work to combat these issues by developing messages and services that deliver against them in turn creating a meaningful and lasting relationship with the consumer.

Drum brings a diverse background to J&Y having served in public relations, marketing and advertisingaccount management positions in a variety of markets for trade associations like the Ohio Society of CPAs, and Charleston (SC) Association of Realtors, as well as managed business-to-business and large retail accounts including Scitex Digital Printing and Lowe's Home Improvement Centers. He was also the Public Relations Director for the Tonka Super Truck Racing Series while with The Marketing Active Group in Columbus, OH.
